“Gavel to Gavel: McGirt v. Oklahoma — Old Promises and New Opportunities"

“On the far end of the Trail of Tears was a promise . . .” So begins the much-discussed U.S. Supreme Court decision in McGirt v. Oklahoma, No. 18-9526, 2020 WL 3848063 (U.S. July 9, 2020). Justice Neil Gorsuch, leading the majority, describes that promise as the granting of a permanent home to the Creek Nation and a guarantee of its ability to govern itself.
