Overview
Our Tax Exempt Organizations team advises charitable organizations on tax, governance, and operational matters. Our clients include substantial private foundations, private operating foundations, public charities, and foreign charitable entities operating in the U.S.
We counsel charitable organizations at every stage of their life cycle. We assist with all steps in an organization’s formation, prepare and file the request for federal tax exemption and requests for state tax exemption, and assist with the ongoing filing of annual reports. Going forward, we counsel charitable organizations on the multitude of issues that may arise in their administration and operations. We work with attorneys from the firm’s other practices, including corporate and commercial transactions, real estate, labor & employment law, general litigation, tax, and private client, to address the full range of our charitable clients’ needs. When needed, we represent charitable organizations before the IRS, or in court proceedings, arbitrations, and mediations.
